How do I know when my timing belt is due?+

What happens if a timing belt breaks?+

The engine stops immediately, and in many engines the valves and pistons collide, which can mean a very expensive repair. That is why belts are replaced on schedule.

Should the water pump be replaced at the same time?+

If the water pump is driven by the timing belt, replacing it at the same time is usually sensible, because the labour overlaps and a failing pump can damage a new belt.
