Clutch & flywheel replacement in Woking

Slipping, juddering, a heavy pedal or trouble finding gears. We confirm it really is the clutch before quoting, and replace the flywheel when it’s needed.

A worn clutch usually gives warning signs before it fails completely: slipping when you accelerate, a pedal that feels heavy or bites very high or low, juddering when you pull away, or difficulty selecting gears. We check that it really is the clutch before we quote, because some of these symptoms can have other causes.

Clutch replacement is a big job, and the flywheel is often involved. If it is worn, cracked or damaged we will explain whether it should be replaced at the same time, so you don't pay for the labour twice.

Signs your clutch is wearing out

  • Engine revs rise but the car doesn't speed up (slipping)
  • Judder or shudder when pulling away
  • A heavy, spongy or sticking clutch pedal
  • The biting point is very high or very low
  • Grinding or difficulty selecting gears
  • A burning smell after hill starts or heavy use

What we do

  • Diagnose the problem to confirm the clutch is the cause
  • Replace the clutch kit
  • Inspect the flywheel and replace it when needed
  • Check the clutch hydraulics and linkage if the pedal feels wrong
  • Explain the work and quote it before we start

Clutch questions

How long does a clutch last?+

It varies a lot with driving style and conditions. Many last well over 60,000 miles, but stop-start traffic, towing and heavy use wear them faster.

Do I need a new flywheel with the clutch?+

Not always. We inspect the flywheel and if it is worn or damaged we'll recommend replacing it while the gearbox is out, since the labour overlaps.

Can I keep driving with a slipping clutch?+

It will get worse and could leave you stranded. A slipping clutch also wears the flywheel, so it's better to get it checked sooner rather than later.
